CVE-2024-36971 is a use-after-free race in the Linux kernel networking stack's __dst_negative_advice() route-management path. When invalidating a socket destination cache, the vulnerable implementation releases the prior destination object before clearing the socket's sk_dst_cache pointer, violating the required RCU ordering. Concurrent access can subsequently dereference the released destination object. The upstream correction clears the socket destination-cache pointer before releasing the old destination and requires each negative_advice callback to perform the reset while preserving protocol-specific handling. The issue became observable with UDP sockets.
