CVE-2024-36978 is an out-of-bounds write vulnerability in the Linux kernel network scheduler's sch_multiq queuing discipline. In multiq_tune(), the queue band's value is updated from the requested configuration after allocation-related logic. Using the previous band count for allocation or subsequent indexing can produce an undersized allocation relative to the new configuration, allowing a write beyond the allocated bounds. The issue was fixed upstream in Linux kernel 6.10-rc3.
