CVE-2024-36979 is a use-after-free vulnerability in the Linux kernel network bridge Multiple Spanning Tree (MST) implementation. During processing from the bridge forward-delay timer path, MST state handling can walk VLAN state while the VLAN is concurrently freed. The affected code also used an RCU dereference without the required protection. The fix corrects the RCU usage and places br_mst_vlan_set_state() under an RCU read-side critical section to prevent accesses to freed VLAN memory.
