CVE-2024-38541 is a buffer-overflow vulnerability in the Linux kernel Open Firmware module code's of_modalias() function. When the supplied output buffer is too small for the initial snprintf() operation, its return value can cause the remaining-length value to become negative and advance the output pointer past the end of the buffer. Subsequent processing can then operate using the invalid pointer. The fix validates available buffer space immediately after the initial snprintf() call and corrects the later length check to account for the terminating NUL byte.
