CVE-2024-38543 is a NULL pointer dereference in the Linux kernel's HMM test infrastructure, in the device-mirror chunk-eviction path implemented by lib/test_hmm.c. The path allocates source and destination page-frame-number arrays for eviction. Under physical-memory exhaustion, allocation can fail; the previous code could subsequently dereference the resulting NULL src_pfns or dst_pfns pointer. The fix changes the allocation strategy to kvcalloc(), which does not require physically contiguous memory, and ensures the eviction path can obtain the required allocations while the device is being removed.
