CVE-2024-38580 is a Linux kernel epoll file-object lifetime flaw. epoll routines could invoke vfs_poll() using a file pointer concurrently with that file's final fput(). Although epoll's mutex prevents teardown from completing until polling returns, the file reference count may already have reached zero; consequently, subsequent attempts to acquire or use a reference are invalid. The fix obtains and retains a valid file reference before epoll calls vfs_poll().
