CVE-2024-38596 is a race condition in the Linux kernel AF_UNIX socket subsystem. unix_release_sock() updates the shared socket sk_shutdown field with WRITE_ONCE during socket release, while unix_stream_sendmsg() previously read that field non-atomically. Concurrent socket release and stream send operations can therefore access sk_shutdown without consistent synchronization. The upstream correction makes the unix_stream_sendmsg() access safe; other relevant accesses are protected by unix_state_lock().
