CVE-2024-40898 is a server-side request forgery vulnerability in Apache HTTP Server affecting Windows deployments that use mod_rewrite in server or virtual host context. The flaw allows an attacker to trigger outbound requests from the vulnerable server by sending specially crafted inbound requests. In affected configurations, this behavior can cause the server to initiate authentication to an attacker-controlled system and potentially disclose NTLM hashes. The issue is specifically associated with mod_rewrite processing in server/vhost scope on Windows platforms.
