CVE-2024-40904 is an uncontrolled resource-consumption flaw in the Linux kernel USB CDC-WDM driver. The interrupt-URB completion callback immediately resubmits interrupt URBs that complete with an -EPROTO error while issuing unratelimited error messages for each completion. A sustained stream of such failures can produce thousands of kernel-log writes per second; the logging overhead causes the callback path to run long enough to trigger a soft CPU lockup. The fix replaces the affected dev_err() calls with dev_err_ratelimited().
