CVE-2024-40905 is a race condition in the Linux kernel IPv6 routing function __fib6_drop_pcpu_from(). Repeated compiler-generated reads of the per-CPU route pointer can observe different values if another CPU clears the pointer in rt6_get_pcpu_route(). A subsequent read can return NULL, leading to a kernel null-pointer dereference and general protection fault. The failure was observed during IPv6 route teardown associated with network namespace cleanup. The fix uses READ_ONCE() to prevent repeated pointer reads and RCU read-side locking to protect the route object's lifetime during dereferencing.

A race condition in Linux kernel IPv6 route handling can cause a null-pointer dereference and kernel crash. The supplied CVSS v3 score is 4.7 (Medium), indicating local access, low privileges, high attack complexity, and an availability impact without confidentiality or integrity impact. The fix adds READ_ONCE() and RCU read-side locking to protect access to the per-CPU route pointer.
A Linux kernel IPv6 routing race condition in __fib6_drop_pcpu_from() that can cause a null-pointer dereference and kernel crash, affecting availability. The referenced Google COS sys-kernel/lakitu-kernel-6_1 package is remediated in version 18244.151.9 or later.
