CVE-2024-40913 is a use-after-free vulnerability in the Linux kernel CacheFiles subsystem's anonymous file-descriptor creation path. The affected code installed an anonymous file descriptor with fd_install() before it had successfully completed copy_to_user() and acquired the associated cache reference. Once installed, the descriptor was visible to userspace and could be closed. Its close path could then release a cache reference that had not been acquired, leaving the cache object vulnerable to use-after-free. The fix acquires the cache reference before installing the descriptor and delays fd_install() until copy_to_user() succeeds, ensuring that ownership is not transferred to userspace until all preceding operations have completed.
