CVE-2024-40960 is a NULL-pointer dereference in the Linux kernel IPv6 routing path. The rt6_probe() routine can continue processing after __in6_dev_get() fails and returns NULL, then dereference fields of the absent IPv6 device object during route/nexthop matching. The upstream fix exits rt6_probe() when no IPv6 device object is available.
