CVE-2024-40961 is a NULL-pointer dereference in the Linux kernel IPv6 route-management path. During next-hop initialization, fib6_nh_init() invokes gateway validation, which can call ip6_route_check_nh(). That path obtains an IPv6 device object through in6_dev_get(), but did not account for that function returning NULL. Subsequent dereference of the absent IPv6 device object in fib6_nh_init() causes a kernel fault while processing IPv6 route creation.
