CVE-2024-40978 is a flaw in the Linux kernel qedi SCSI driver’s debugfs read handler for the do-not-recover command attribute. The handler passed its user-space output-buffer pointer directly to sprintf(), causing kernel code to write through a __user pointer rather than formatting into kernel memory and safely copying the result to user space. The resulting invalid kernel access can trigger a page fault and kernel crash. The fix formats output in a small stack buffer and returns it through simple_read_from_buffer(), which performs the required copy_to_user() operation.
