CVE-2024-41042 is an uncontrolled-recursion vulnerability in the Linux kernel netfilter nf_tables ruleset-validation logic. The obsolete loop-detection path could recursively traverse a suitably constructed in-progress ruleset from register-store validation before the complete rule graph was available. This could bypass effective cycle handling and recurse without a bounded termination condition. The upstream correction removes the redundant loop-detection implementation and uses nft_chain_validate(), which detects chain cycles through the bounded jump-stack validation and follows map validation through nft_lookup callbacks.
