CVE-2024-41057 is a slab use-after-free vulnerability in the Linux kernel CacheFiles/FS-Cache subsystem. A race between cookie lookup and cache withdrawal allows a cache object to be created after withdrawal has observed an object count of zero. Cache teardown can consequently free the associated cachefiles_volume while the object still references it. A subsequent call to cachefiles_withdraw_cookie() dereferences the freed volume through object->volume->cache. Fault-injection stress testing detected an eight-byte read from freed memory. The fix synchronizes volume withdrawal with outstanding lookups before withdrawing cache objects.

A race condition in the Linux kernel CacheFiles subsystem can allow a cache volume to be freed while a cookie lookup is still underway, causing a slab use-after-free in cachefiles_withdraw_cookie(). The reference assigns a CVSS v3 score of 7.0, with local access, low privileges, high attack complexity, and potentially high confidentiality, integrity, and availability impacts. The fix synchronizes volume withdrawal and outstanding lookups before withdrawing cached objects.
A high-severity Linux kernel CacheFiles/FS-Cache slab use-after-free vulnerability in cachefiles_withdraw_cookie(). A race during cache withdrawal can cause code to dereference a freed cachefiles_volume object, potentially affecting confidentiality, integrity, and availability for local authenticated attackers.
