CVE-2024-42107 is a race condition in the Linux kernel Intel Ethernet Controller (ice) driver’s handling of PTP external timestamp events. ice_ptp_extts_event() can execute after ice_ptp_release() has released the PTP clock, such as when an external-timestamp interrupt arrives after PTP is disabled. The event handler subsequently calls ptp_clock_event() with a NULL PTP clock pointer. The fix makes ice_ptp_extts_event() check whether PTP is ready and return without processing the event when it is not.
