CVE-2024-42131 is an integer-overflow vulnerability in the Linux kernel memory-management dirty-throttling logic. The affected calculations assume dirty-memory limits expressed in PAGE_SIZE units fit in 32 bits, allowing subsequent arithmetic to fit in 64 bits. Configuring excessively large dirty limits violates those assumptions, causing arithmetic overflows and potentially division-by-zero conditions. The upstream correction rejects excessively large byte-based dirty limits and caps ratio-derived dirty page limits at UINT_MAX.
