CVE-2024-42139 is an improper resource shutdown vulnerability in the Linux kernel Intel Ethernet Controller (ice) driver. The ts2phc application enables and disables external timestamp (extts) events. Removing the driver while ts2phc is running can leave an event enabled after Precision Time Protocol (PTP) resources are released, potentially causing a kernel crash. After the driver is reloaded and the application restarts, a stale event from the previous run can continue firing on its former channel and generate unexpected-channel messages. The fix disables extts events when PTP resources are released.

A Linux kernel ice driver flaw leaves external timestamp events enabled when the driver is removed while ts2phc is running, potentially causing a kernel crash and denial of service. Residual events can also continue firing after the driver is reloaded. The listed CVSS v3 base score is 5.5, with local access and low privileges required.
An improper extended-TX-timestamp (extts) handling flaw in the Linux kernel ICE Ethernet driver.
An improper handling vulnerability in the Linux kernel Intel Ethernet Controller (ice) driver relating to extts handling.
A Linux kernel ice driver flaw in external timestamp (extts) event handling. Failure to disable extts events when PTP is released can leave an event active after driver removal, potentially causing a kernel crash.
