CVE-2024-42240 is an x86 Linux kernel flaw in the Branch History Injection (BHI) mitigation path for compatibility-mode SYSENTER entry. When BHI mitigation is enabled, entry_SYSENTER_compat() invokes CLEAR_BRANCH_HISTORY, which executes clear_bhb_loop(), before clearing the processor Trap Flag (TF). A SYSENTER invocation with TF set therefore triggers a debug exception while executing outside the expected entry_SYSENTER_compat() context, causing exc_debug_kernel() to emit a warning. The correction moves branch-history clearing until after TF has been cleared.
