CVE-2024-42241 affects Linux kernel shared-memory filesystem (mm/shmem) handling of PMD-sized page-cache folios. On configurations where HPAGE_PMD_ORDER exceeds MAX_PAGECACHE_ORDER, a PMD-sized shmem page-cache entry can be created even though the xarray cannot represent or subsequently split it safely. Operations that split the entry can trigger a kernel warning in xarray split allocation. The fix disables PMD-sized page cache for shmem when the PMD huge-page order is larger than the maximum page-cache order supported by xarray.
