CVE-2024-42353 is an open-redirect vulnerability in WebOb's normalization of HTTP Location headers. When converting a redirect location to an absolute URL, WebOb parses and joins an application-controlled redirect target with the request base URL. A target beginning with a protocol-relative reference, such as a double slash followed by a host, is parsed as having its own authority component. URL joining then replaces the request hostname with the attacker-controlled hostname, rather than retaining the expected application origin. The issue is fixed in WebOb 1.8.8.
