CVE-2024-44193 is a local privilege escalation vulnerability affecting iTunes for Windows, including version 12.13.2.3, and fixed in iTunes 12.13.3 for Windows. Apple describes the root cause as a logic issue addressed with improved restrictions. Supporting content indicates the flaw is in the handling of the C:\ProgramData\Apple\Lockdown path by AppleMobileDeviceService.exe, which runs as SYSTEM. Low-privileged local users can create arbitrary files and directories under that path due to weak permissions. When triggered, the service recursively traverses and deletes content it considers invalid, reportedly using delete-on-close semantics and following NTFS junctions. This behavior can be abused to transform attacker-controlled content in the Lockdown directory into an arbitrary file or folder deletion primitive as SYSTEM. Public write-up material further describes chaining this primitive with Windows Installer rollback abuse involving C:\Config.Msi to achieve SYSTEM-level code execution.
