CVE-2024-44987 is a use-after-free vulnerability in the Linux kernel IPv6 transmission function ip6_send_skb(). After ip6_local_out() returns, the routing object referenced by rt may no longer be valid, making subsequent dereferences unsafe without an RCU read lock. An observed failure occurred during raw IPv6 socket message handling, with KASAN detecting an eight-byte read from freed slab memory. The routing object was allocated through IPv6 blackhole-route handling and freed during RCU processing. The flaw can compromise kernel memory safety and system stability.

A use-after-free vulnerability in the Linux kernel's IPv6 ip6_send_skb() function caused by dereferencing a routing object after ip6_local_out() returns without holding an RCU read lock. The advisory identifies affected Google Container-Optimized OS kernel packages and rates the vulnerability High, with a CVSS v3 base score of 7.8 and a local attack vector. Update the affected packages to version 18613.0.41 or later.
A Linux kernel IPv6 use-after-free flaw in ip6_send_skb(), caused by dereferencing a route object after ip6_local_out() without the required RCU read-side lock. The affected Google COS sys-kernel/lakitu-kernel-6_1 package is remediated in version 18244.151.57 or later.
A high-impact local vulnerability affecting Unity Linux systems, requiring low privileges and no user interaction, with potential for complete compromise of confidentiality, integrity, and availability.
Use-after-free in the Linux kernel IPv6 packet-send path.
