CVE-2024-47611 is an improper Unicode handling vulnerability in the native Windows command-line tools shipped with XZ Utils 5.6.2 and earlier. When compiled with MinGW-w64 or MSVC, the tools convert Unicode command-line characters that are unavailable in the active legacy Windows code page using best-fit mappings. Certain mappings yield ASCII metacharacters or path-significant characters, changing the semantic interpretation of the resulting command line. An attacker-controlled filename containing affected Unicode characters can consequently inject command-line arguments or alter path traversal behavior. The liblzma library is not affected, and builds targeting Cygwin or MSYS2 are unaffected.
