CVE-2024-50099 affects the ARM64 Linux kernel probe decoder's handling of uprobes placed on LDR (literal) and LDRSW (literal) instructions. The uprobe paths reused simulate_ldr_literal() and simulate_ldrsw_literal(), which were designed for kprobes and perform plain C accesses while executing in kernel context. These accesses lack exception-table entries required to safely handle faults on user-memory access. A fault is consequently treated as an unintended kernel access to user memory and triggers a BUG(). Hardware or software Privileged Access Never also causes these simulated user-memory accesses to fault. The simulation was additionally privileged and theoretically could address a limited kernel virtual-address range through address wrapping, although contemporary kernels reserve the reachable region. The correction rejects uprobes on these instruction classes through arm_probe_decode_insn(), while preserving the simulation functions for kprobes.
