CVE-2024-50261 is a use-after-free vulnerability in the Linux kernel MACsec subsystem's hardware-offload path. MACsec allocates a metadata destination object to retain the Secure Channel Identifier used for offloaded traffic. During MACsec network-device teardown, the object could be freed immediately while an skb retained a reference and a network driver was still transmitting the packet. A subsequent driver access to the freed metadata destination object results in a slab use-after-free. The fix replaces immediate freeing in the MACsec device cleanup path with reference-counted destination release, preserving the object until outstanding skb references are released.
