CVE-2024-53135 affects Linux KVM's VMX support for Intel Processor Trace virtualization in guest/host mode. KVM did not reliably ensure Intel PT tracing was disabled before VM entry when loading the guest IA32_RTIT_CTL MSR, violating VMX consistency requirements and potentially causing guest-fatal VM-entry failures. KVM also failed to validate userspace-provided guest CPUID Intel PT capabilities before using them to determine the Intel PT MSRs to pass through and save or restore during VM entry and exit. A guest configuration that advertises more Intel PT address ranges than the physical processor supports can cause KVM to access non-existent MSRs. The fix disables this Intel PT virtualization mode unless the kernel is built with CONFIG_BROKEN enabled.
