CVE-2024-53147 is an out-of-bounds access vulnerability in the Linux kernel's exFAT directory-entry handling. When a directory's size is at least the cluster size, filesystem corruption can cause start_clu to become an invalid end-of-file cluster. Under these conditions, the ei->hint_femp.eidx directory-entry hint can point outside the directory, resulting in an out-of-bounds access and potentially further filesystem corruption. The fix validates start_clu and treats the file or directory as empty when the cluster is invalid.
