CVE-2024-53222 is a NULL-pointer dereference in the Linux kernel zram driver’s comp_algorithm_show() sysfs show handler. During zram device initialization, the primary compression-algorithm entry can remain NULL if comp_algorithm_set() has not yet executed. Because the zram device is exposed to userspace after device_add_disk(), a userspace read of the compression-algorithm sysfs attribute can race with initialization and cause comp_algorithm_show() to pass the NULL entry to string comparison logic. The fix initializes the compression algorithm before registering the disk device, eliminating exposure of a partially initialized zram device.
