CVE-2024-5452 is a remote code execution vulnerability in lightning-ai/pytorch-lightning version 2.2.1. PyTorch Lightning processes deepdiff.Delta objects to alter application state in response to frontend actions. An attacker can craft a serialized delta that bypasses deserialization whitelist restrictions and carries dunder attributes. Processing the delta permits access to other modules, classes, and instances, enabling arbitrary attribute writes and potentially arbitrary code execution. Self-hosted PyTorch Lightning applications are exposed in the default configuration because the delta endpoint is enabled by default.

This repository documents and provides a proof-of-concept (PoC) exploit for a remote code execution (RCE) vulnerability in Lightning AI's PyTorch Lightning framework. The vulnerability arises from improper handling of double underscore (dunder) attributes during deserialization of user-supplied data by the deepdiff library, which is used by the /api/v1/delta endpoint. The PoC exploit, detailed in the README, constructs a malicious serialized delta object that bypasses attribute restrictions and injects arbitrary code for execution on the server. The exploit targets the /api/v1/delta HTTP endpoint, which is enabled by default in PyTorch Lightning applications. The repository contains only documentation and no actual code files, but the README provides a full exploit script and a minimal vulnerable application example. The exploit is classified as a proof-of-concept and demonstrates the risk of RCE in default deployments of PyTorch Lightning.
