CVE-2024-56603 is a use-after-free vulnerability in the Linux kernel AF_CAN networking subsystem. In the error path of can_create(), an allocated socket object is freed after sock_init_data() has already associated that object with the supplied socket structure. The socket structure consequently retains a dangling pointer to freed memory, which can be dereferenced during subsequent socket processing.
