CVE-2024-56672 is a use-after-free vulnerability in the Linux kernel block control group subsystem. While traversing the block cgroup hierarchy to release online pins, blkcg_unpin_online() called blkcg_parent(blkcg) after blkcg_destroy_blkgs(blkcg). Destruction could allow the blkcg object to be freed before its parent pointer was read. Kernel Address Sanitizer detected an eight-byte read from freed memory during cgroup writeback release work. Triggering the defect is difficult because object freeing is deferred through multiple RCU grace periods and work-item execution; the reported reproduction required an artificially injected delay.

A use-after-free vulnerability in the Linux kernel's block control-group subsystem. Accessing the parent pointer after destroying block-group structures can reference freed memory. The advisory rates it CVSS v3 7.0, with local access, low privileges, and high attack complexity. The reported reproduction required artificially injected delays. The fix reads the parent pointer before destruction; the advisory recommends updating the affected Lakitu kernel packages to version 18613.75.114 or later.
