CVE-2024-57977 is a denial-of-service vulnerability in the Linux kernel memory-controller (memcg) out-of-memory handling path. When an OOM cgroup contains a very large number of tasks, mem_cgroup_scan_tasks() may traverse all tasks without yielding the CPU. This extended traversal can trigger a watchdog-detected soft lockup during OOM processing. The fix introduces periodic cond_resched() calls in mem_cgroup_scan_tasks() and periodically touches the soft-lockup watchdog during global OOM handling.
