CVE-2024-57986 is an improper input-validation vulnerability in the Linux kernel HID core, introduced in Linux kernel 5.0. The hid_apply_multiplier() logic incorrectly assumed that a HID Resolution Multiplier control would always be contained in a Logical Collection. HID specifications permit a multiplier without a Logical Collection to apply to all controls in a report. Where no Logical Collection exists in the applicable collection hierarchy, the vulnerable code did not correctly represent this condition. The fix sets the multiplier collection reference to NULL when the discovered collection is not Logical.
