The corrective change separates synchronous/non-asynchronous processing from asynchronous request handling. The revised non-asynchronous path waits for cryptographic completion and returns its result directly, rather than using the asynchronous-path reference-counting behavior. This isolates the simpler synchronous lifecycle from async notification and socket-close handling.
