CVE-2024-6119 is an out-of-bounds or invalid memory-read condition in OpenSSL X.509 certificate name checking. When an application compares an expected DNS name, email address, or IP address against an otherName subject alternative name in a certificate, it may attempt to read an invalid memory address. The resulting exception can terminate the application. The flaw affects OpenSSL 3.0 through 3.3, but not their FIPS modules, OpenSSL 1.1.1, or OpenSSL 1.0.2.

What it means. What to do now. Patch path, mitigations, and the assume-compromise checklist.
What an attacker gets, and what they’ve been doing with it.
otherName subject alternative name can cause abnormal process termination and denial of service. Basic certificate-chain validation, including signature and date validation, is not affected. TLS clients validating server certificates are the principal affected use case; TLS servers are generally not affected because they rarely perform reference-identifier checks on client certificates. If you can’t patch tonight, do this now.
