CVE-2024-8682 affects the JNews - WordPress Newspaper Magazine Blog AMP Theme for WordPress in all versions up to and including 11.6.6. The vulnerability is caused by improper validation in the register_handler() function: the theme fails to verify whether WordPress user registration is enabled before creating a new user account. As a result, an unauthenticated remote attacker can invoke the registration workflow and create an account even when site administrators have disabled public user registration.

This repository contains a proof-of-concept (PoC) exploit for CVE-2024-8682, targeting the JNews WordPress theme (version 11.6.6 and below). The exploit leverages an unauthenticated AJAX endpoint ('/?ajax-request=jnews') to first retrieve a valid 'jnews_nonce' via the 'jnews_refresh_nonce' action, and then uses this nonce to register a new user account via the 'register_handler' action, even if WordPress registration is disabled. The repository consists of a Python script ('cve-2024-8682.py') that automates this process, and a README.md file with usage instructions and references. The exploit requires only the target URL, desired username, and email address as input, and demonstrates the vulnerability by creating a new user on the target site. No payload beyond user creation is included, and the exploit is a standalone PoC, not part of any framework.
