CVE-2025-0678 is an integer-overflow vulnerability in GRUB2's squash4 filesystem module. While reading a squash4 filesystem, the module uses filesystem geometry values controlled by the filesystem image to calculate internal buffer sizes. Insufficient validation of arithmetic overflow can cause an undersized allocation. Subsequent data reading writes the expected amount of data into the undersized heap buffer, producing a heap-based out-of-bounds write.

A GRUB2 bootloader vulnerability disclosed as part of Microsoft's coordinated bootloader research campaign involving GRUB2, U-Boot, and Barebox. The content indicates GRUB2 flaws are significant because exploitation in Secure Boot-trusted bootloaders can undermine the boot chain and enable persistent malware.
