CVE-2025-0685 is an integer-overflow vulnerability in GRUB2's JFS filesystem module. While processing JFS filesystem geometry during file reads, GRUB derives internal buffer sizes from filesystem-controlled values without correctly detecting arithmetic overflow. This can cause GRUB to allocate a buffer smaller than required. During symlink lookup, grub_jfs_lookup_symlink() can subsequently write beyond that allocation while grub_jfs_read_file() processes the crafted filesystem data, producing a heap-based out-of-bounds write.
