CVE-2025-20386 is a high-severity local privilege-escalation weakness in Splunk Enterprise for Windows. In affected versions below 10.0.2, 9.4.6, 9.3.8, and 9.2.10, a new installation or upgrade can apply incorrect NTFS permissions to the Splunk installation directory. As a result, non-administrator local users may be able to access the directory and its contents, including binaries, configuration files, scripts, and other resources that should be restricted. The issue is caused by improper permission assignment during installation or upgrade, and is consistent with CWE-732. Supporting analysis indicates that if writable sensitive files in the installation path are later loaded or executed by Splunk services, an attacker can tamper with those resources to achieve privilege escalation.
