CVE-2025-20387 is a high-severity local privilege-escalation vulnerability in Splunk Universal Forwarder for Windows. In affected versions below 10.0.2, 9.4.6, 9.3.8, and 9.2.10, a new installation or upgrade can assign incorrect NTFS permissions to the Universal Forwarder installation directory. As a result, non-administrator local users may gain access to the directory and its contents, including binaries, configuration files, scripts, and other resources that should be protected. Because Splunk service components on Windows typically run with elevated privileges, an attacker with local access may be able to tamper with files loaded or executed by those services and thereby escalate privileges. The issue is consistent with incorrect permission assignment for a critical resource.
