CVE-2025-21844 is a null-pointer dereference vulnerability in the Linux kernel SMB client’s encrypted-message receive path. The receive_encrypted_standard() function did not validate the return values of cifs_buf_get() and cifs_small_buf_get() before using next_buffer. If either buffer-allocation routine failed, next_buffer could be NULL and subsequently be dereferenced. The upstream fix validates allocation results before use.
