CVE-2025-21979 is a use-after-free vulnerability in the Linux kernel cfg80211 wireless subsystem. A wiphy_work item can be queued as soon as a wiphy object is allocated and initialized via wiphy_new_nm, which results in the associated rdev::wiphy_work being scheduled. If wiphy_free is invoked before the queued work executes, the underlying wiphy object may be freed while the pending work item still references it. When the deferred work later runs, it can dereference invalid memory, creating a use-after-free condition. The upstream fix cancels pending wiphy_work before freeing the wiphy object, preventing stale work from operating on released memory.
