CVE-2025-25724 is an unchecked-return-value vulnerability in libarchive through version 3.7.7. The list_item_verbose function in tar/util.c does not validate the return value from strftime while formatting verbose TAR-listing output. A fixed-size 100-byte formatting buffer can be inadequate for locale-specific date and time output; subsequent handling of a failed strftime operation can cause denial of service or other unspecified impact when a crafted TAR archive is processed with verbosity level 2.
