Jinja versions before 3.1.6 contain a sandbox-escape vulnerability in the interaction between SandboxedEnvironment and the attr filter. Although the sandbox intercepts access to and invocation of str.format to prevent sandbox escape, an attacker-controlled template can use the attr filter to retrieve a direct reference to a string object's native format method. This bypasses the sandbox environment's attribute-lookup controls and can be leveraged to execute arbitrary Python code in the process rendering the template. Version 3.1.6 changes the attr filter so that attribute access is mediated by the active environment rather than bypassing its lookup restrictions.
