CVE-2025-27817 is an arbitrary file read and server-side request forgery vulnerability in Apache Kafka clients' handling of SASL/OAUTHBEARER configuration. The issue affects the configuration parameters used to define OAuth token and JWKS endpoints, specifically the settings for the token endpoint URL and JWKS endpoint URL. When an application permits an untrusted party to supply or influence Kafka client configuration, an attacker can provide crafted URL values that cause the client to access unintended resources. This can result in local file contents being read and exposed through error logging, access to environment-derived sensitive information, or outbound requests being sent to attacker-chosen or otherwise unintended destinations. The flaw is particularly relevant in deployments such as Apache Kafka Connect, where control over connector or client configuration can turn REST API access into access to local filesystem content, environment data, or arbitrary URLs.

A vulnerability in Apache Kafka Clients allows untrusted configuration of sasl.oauthbearer.token.endpoint.url and sasl.oauthbearer.jwks.endpoint.url to enable arbitrary file reads, exposure of environment variables, and server-side requests to unintended destinations. In Apache Kafka Connect, this can escalate REST API access into filesystem, environment, or URL access. The reference reports available exploits and recommends updating kafka-clients to 3.9.1 or later. Version 3.9.1 introduces a URL allowlist system property but permits all URLs by default; version 4.0.0 and later require explicitly allowed URLs.
A file:// URI file-read vulnerability mentioned only as a comparison point; the content states the described issue is an arbitrary file-write-to-RCE chain instead.
