CVE-2025-3861 is an incorrect authorization vulnerability in the Prevent Direct Access – Protect WordPress Files plugin for WordPress. In affected versions 2.8.6 through 2.8.8.2, the plugin's pda_lite_custom_permission_check function uses a misconfigured capability check that authorizes users with the edit_posts capability, rather than restricting access to only appropriately privileged users such as administrators or the relevant media owner. As a result, authenticated users with Contributor-level access and above can reach protected REST API functionality and access or modify the protection status of media that should not be manageable by their role. The flaw affects authorization enforcement for plugin REST endpoints associated with media protection management.
