CVE-2025-38614 is an insufficient recursion-depth enforcement flaw in the Linux kernel eventpoll (epoll) subsystem. The epoll graph-validation logic in ep_loop_check_proc() detected loops but did not fully account for upward paths and could undercount depth when previously visited subtrees had multiple downward paths of differing lengths. A subsequent reverse-path check occurred only after edge creation and did not fully constrain paths involving non-epoll files. Consequently, epoll instance graphs could exceed the intended nesting constraint; recursion of approximately 500 levels was demonstrated on Linux kernel v6.15. The fix records subtree depths, determines maximum upward traversal depth, and enforces a maximum path length of EP_MAX_NESTS edges between epoll nodes.
