CVE-2025-39927 is a race condition in the Linux kernel Ceph client’s processing of MDS replies. A concurrent filesystem operation, such as rename, can cause the request’s cached parent inode (req->r_parent) to become stale after request initiation but before reply processing. Without confirming that the cached inode matches the parent-directory information returned by the MDS, the client can apply state changes to an incorrect directory inode. The affected logic also failed to transfer the associated CEPH_CAP_PIN when updating req->r_parent, leaving a pin on the stale parent and failing to acquire one on the replacement parent.
